New places to go to

I have received my summer assignment! I am looking forward to a new northern experience in the North Cascades of Washington.

I will be posted at Baker Lake, Swift Creek Campground from May though September.

This will be the most isolated I have been in my work travels. It is 20 miles from Concrete Washington, east of Mount Vernon in the Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

I will be about 35 miles from the Canadian border, but have no clue how close the nearest crossing is. I suspect Blaine.. a place I have crossed and been cross examined at many times.

The nearest "Big Cities" are Seattle, and Vancouver B.C. Hmnnn.. thats a tough one. Seattle would be easier.. but Vancouver is Oh-So-Nice.

The company I work for makes this a REAL job, not just lounging around a campground waiting for campers to come give you money. The compensation is wonderful, the treatment is outstanding, and 2 days off mid week make it almost like a 5 month vacation.

My Verizon maps show me on a fringe for Data coverage. I may have to invest in a booster.. cause I sure am not expecting that the wifi they speak of will be done by the time I get there.

I can live without TV.. heaven forbid you yank my internet away! EEEYYYYEEEE!

  1. I have been kinda sand bagging your posts. Just wanted to let you know I am on the WKN forum; Irishrover! Your boondocking lifestyle has intrigued me, as I may have to downsize in the near future from my 28' Class C, or do a lot of mods to get off the grid. Your Posts are an excellent read.

  2. Having lived about 25 mile from Baker lake for almost 20 years let me be the first to welcome you. Ironically I now also live in an RV and am no longer in that part of the country.
The nearest boarder may in fact be in Lynden. Although you will cross if you take a drive along Mosquito lake rd,(a beautiful drive that you should not miss) there is no vehicle access to the interior great hiking area though.

As for civilization Bellingham is not huge but it does have most of the necessities.

You will(unless it has closed) pass a casino in the town of Nooksack that has a very nice restaurant. And you should try the little shops and cafe's in Maple Falls. (Nooksack and Maple Falls are both up highway 9 on your way to Baker lake.

  3. Hi Gina,

Your closest crossing will be likely be Sumas, much less hectic than Blaine, and Bellingham is indeed a big city. There is a wonderful little store with lots of cool stuff and a great deli we always stop at on highway 9, between Acme and Demming, as soon as I think of the name I'll let you know! We love that area, and canoed Baker Lake many years ago. I think you'll love it, especially if we ever get warm weather. I guess you are there by now....
